SQL Formatter

Re-indent a SQL query clause by clause, with joins, subqueries and CASE blocks laid out consistently. The formatter tokenises the query in your browser and only keeps output whose token stream matches the input.

Paste a query and press Format query.

The formatter understands strings, quoted identifiers, line and block comments, and placeholders such as ? and :name, so a semicolon inside a string or a -- inside an identifier cannot break the layout. After formatting, the output is tokenised again and compared with the input: if any token changed, the result is withheld instead of quietly corrupting the query. Unbalanced parentheses are reported but the rest of the query is still formatted.

What Is SQL Formatter?

The SQL Formatter tokenizes a statement before it formats anything, so a keyword that happens to sit inside a string literal or a comment never moves a line break. Major clauses break onto their own lines, two-word clauses such as GROUP BY and LEFT JOIN are recognised as one unit, AND and OR each get an indented line of their own, and a subquery inside parentheses indents one level deeper. Keyword casing, indent width and long SELECT lists are all under your control, and unbalanced parentheses or an unterminated quote are flagged rather than quietly reformatted.

Who Uses the SQL Formatter?

Backend developers tidy the query pasted out of an application log, analysts make report SQL readable before review, and anyone comparing two near-identical statements benefits from aligned clauses.

How to Use the SQL Formatter

  1. Paste the query, with several statements separated by semicolons.
  2. Set the indent width and the keyword casing you want, then press Format.
  3. Read the structure warnings, then copy or download the formatted result.

Why Choose Our SQL Formatter?

  • Real tokenizer, so strings, comments and quoted identifiers keep their contents
  • Two-word clauses and nested subqueries indented correctly
  • Structural problems surfaced as a list without pretending to validate SQL
